Heads a team of chaplains, holistic nurses and family liaisons who help patients, families and staff deal with illness, stress, death and bereavement. She is Clinical Assistant Professor of Spirituality and Medicine at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine. She has been an ordained Baptist clergywoman for more than 30 years, and has worked as a chaplain and chaplain-educator for more than 20 years. She came to the Clinic in 2007 to become director of the chaplain training program, and became department director in 2013. She holds the Master of Divinity from Union Theological Seminary at Columbia University in New York City and a Doctor of Ministry from Ecumenical Theological Seminary in Detroit. She served as Board Chair for ACPE: the Standard for Spiritual Care and Education in 2018 and 2019. She is a Certified Teacher-in-Training for Cognitively-Based Compassion Training through Emory University. Though she is a native Southerner and 40-year resident of Atlanta, she enjoys life on Lake Erie. She has been happily married for 36 years to the father of their two grown sons – a journalist and a doctor.
Lead pastor at Brooklyn, N.Y.’s Concord Baptist Church of Christ, which remains on the forefront of justice nearly two centuries after its founding. “I am excited,” Simpson says, “about building this community of believers and watching God move from a congregation in the center of Brooklyn to all parts of the world.” In addition, Simpson is an associate professor of Homiletics at Drew University Theological School, Madison, N.J. He holds a D.Min. from United Theological Seminary, Trotwood, Ohio; an M.Div. from Union Theological Seminary, New York City; and a B.A. from Dennison University, Granville, Ohio.
The author of Disaster Relief Chaplaincy (North American Mission Board) and also has broad chaplain experience in the workplace, parish, healthcare, community, and law enforcement arenas. She is an adjunct professor at Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary and Denver Seminary, with a D.Min. from Golden Gate Theological Seminary and an M.Div. from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.
Pastors First Baptist Church in America, Providence, R.I., where she has served since fall 2015. The church remains committed to the gospel of Jesus Christ and Roger Williams’ founding vision of soul liberty. A native Texan, Washam graduated from University of Texas at Austin and Harvard Divinity School. She makes her home with her husband and son in Rhode Island. As an agent of God’s love, she considers it an honor to get paid to do what she would do in her free time anyway.
Rev. Dr. Yvonne Martinez Thorne is founder and CEO of Cultivating Wholeness Counseling Associates, where “caring for the whole person matters.” Her faith-based practices, currently in both Pennsylvania and Florida, include specialized services for ordained clergy and secular and faith-based counseling and psychotherapy to people of different faiths, races, and cultures.
Served on the staffs of multicultural, urban, and suburban churches and has done extensive work in the areas of education, counseling, and support programs. She has worked in the not for profit realm, founding the Pastoral Counseling Center of Trinity Church Boston and serving as the First Executive Director of the Boston Ten Point Coalition.
Currently serves First Baptist Church Waterloo IA and is preparing to relocate to Brewster, MA to serve with an incredibly gifted ministry team. He is passionate about music ministry, care, and this beloved American Baptist family which has nourished, cultivated, and formed him through the years. Joe attended Ottawa University (KS) where he met Shelby, and their home overflows with the personalities of Corbany, Addyson, and Greyson. He has served with three Mission Summit house bands, including last year's highlight, the 2019 Summit by the Sea (Virginia Beach), and is praying for our churches, ongoing ministries and missions, and the care of our ministers during this pandemic.

Their music draws from a wide range of genres and influences including jazz, North American folk music, Latin American music, and pop, and includes both original compositions and interpretations of songs by other composers. The group’s goal is for their music to serve as a spiritual expression which uplifts, heals, inspires growth and promotes positive change. The ensemble is the house band for Jazz Worship at Old South Church in Boston, a weekly worship service which has become a livestreamed Virtual Jazz Coffee House since the Covid-19 pandemic arrived in New England.
